Aperam has commissioned on its premises in Genk a photovoltaic installation with a capacity
of 23 Mwp. The construction of this installation was completed by Perpetum Energy.
Aperam is a global player in the stainless, electrical and specialty steel markets, and also aglobal leader in environmental sustainability. Our stainless steel products are not only 100% recyclable, they also reflect our position as a fair and sustainable company with the best in class CO2 footprint within our sector. Aperam is one of the big energy consumers in Belgium. The Journey towards CO2 neutrality by 2050 is a key strategic objective of Aperam. Installing renewable energy on its premises is one of the ways to achieve this mission.
The installation that will be installed in Genk will generate 23 MWp with a yearly energy production of 20300 MWh. This will result in 7300 ton of avoided CO2 emissions, which is equal to the emissions of 5900 average households. It is equal to the CO2 adsorbed by 720ha forest. Aperam will consume at least 97% of the generated power directly by the plants in Genk. With more than 50000 panels operational, It is one of the biggest photovoltaic installations in Belgium.
For Aperam, for the city of Genk and the Flemish Region this is a big step towards a green future, and this will further secure the position of Aperam as a sustainable long term employer in the region. At the same time EV charging stations will be deployed to be used for the cars of the company and the employees. This will guarantee that the fleet of Aperam will become gradually emission free.
After a profound market analyses Aperam decided to allocate the execution of the entire project (PV-installation and the EV-charging stations) to Perpetum Energy, a company based in Sint- Denijs- Westrem (Gent).
